St COLUMBA HOTEL: About Iona

Make no mistake. Iona is not easy to get to. Having journeyed across Mull, the only way to reach the island is by crossing the narrow Sound of Iona from Fionnphort, by passenger ferry. And you will have to leave your car behind. The reward as you reach Iona, is the beginning of a soul nurturing experience far removed from the stresses of everyday life.

Forget city life and all the noise and bustle that goes with it. There is no bustle, and the prevailing sound is that of the waves on the shore and birdsong. Take a short walk beyond the village and you will find, on this tiny island, just 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, an unspoilt and elemental wildness that will make your heart sing. You can walk for hours and meet no one. You can get lost on an island too small to get lost in.

There are many ‘secret’ places to be found. There are endless walks to places of legendary and historical fame. There is much to interest those visitors keen on bird watching, the study of wild flowers and geology. For others there is the sheer beauty of the landscape – an overwhelming experience of the dance between land, sky and sea, between earth and spirit. There is solitude for those that seek it, or a wee dram of fine Scottish Whisky by the open fire, for those that choose it.

Within walking distance is a wonderful choice of beaches, mainly of white sand, others with multi-coloured pebbles and shells, it is hard to leave the island without a pocketful of small treasures. Expect to enjoy sand dunes, rock pools, beach-combing and excellent swimming, when the sun shines, in crystal clear turquoise water.
